Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems

Electrical Engineer - Grid Impact of Renewables

The Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE) is looking for a Electrical Engineer to join its Building Energy Efficiency Group. Increasing penetration of grid-connected energy technologies offers potential for significant reductions in primary energy consumption and carbon emissions.  However, managing the impact of these technologies on the distribution grid is a challenge.  Fraunhofer CSE is investigating issues around grid integration of renewable energy sources.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Together with partners, measure, monitor, and model the impact to the electric power grid of a variety of renewable and clean energy technologies, including photovoltaics, wind, energy storage, and plug-in hybrid electric vehichles (PHEVs)
  • Specify, install and operate field monitoring hardware
  • Analyze field data for power quality issues and system stability
  • Develop models (both quantitative and phenomenological) to understand the grid impacts of renewables

Required Experience and Education:

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related discipline, with an emphasis on Electric Power Systems
  • Familiar with grid interconnection standards and grid protection schemes
  • Experience with power quality measurement and instrumentation
  • Strong working knowledge with modeling tools, including generic tools such as MATLAB / Simulink, as well as advanced tools (SKM Power Tools)
  • Working knowledge of North American electric codes and standards (NESC, NEC, CEC, ANSI/IEEE, UL, CSA, NEMA, OSHA)
  • Engineering experience as an employee of a electric utility company or engineering firm desired.
  • Experience with one or more of the following: Photovoltaic generation systems; Energy storage systems, particularly design, sizing and deployment; Combined heat and power (CHP) / co-gen systems; or Wind systems
  • Field installation experience is a plus
  • Power electronics experience helpful

About Fraunhofer CSE:

The Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE) is a contract R&D organization based in Cambridge, MA.  CSE, created as a partnership of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE), the State of Massachusetts and MIT, is dedicated to serving the applied research needs of the sustainable energy industry, helping established industry players and newcomers alike develop clean energy technologies from the laboratory to the production line.  The Center focuses on two key areas: building energy efficiency and next generation photovoltaic modules development.
