The Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE) is looking for a Group Leader, Smart Grid. This is an opportunity to build and lead a world-class multidisciplinary research group. Together with our Building Efficiency Group in Cambridge and several Fraunhofer Institutes with significant Smart Grid efforts in Germany, this new group will address the challenges imposed on the electrical distribution grid by widespread integration of distributed energy generation and new types of loads (PHVs)leveraging the opportunities provided by the communications and information systems revolution. You'll be a key part of a dynamic team that shares a commitment to engineering excellence, combined with an excitement about sustainable energy technology.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Build and lead a world-class team of energy managment and smart grid technology experts.
- Develop a research roadmap and specify equipment capabilities for our smart grid laboratory.
- Develop R&D capabilities that provide a convincing value for industrial clients and market those capabilities.
- Author proposals for research projects funded by government agencies.
- Perform and direct R&D projects to achieve the stated goals of research contracts.
Required Experience and Education:

M.S. degree essential, Ph.D. strongly preferred in Electrical Engineering, or related discipline with an emphasis on electrical distribution systems, distributed energy generation, power electronics and communication systems.
- Thorough understanding of issues surrounding smart grid technology and adoption.
- 5+ years of applied R&D leadership and building industry experience.
- Experience in modeling of electrical systems on different levels.
- Proven track record of authoring proposals and winning grants.
